I am neither an Airline Pilot nor an Aviation Mechanic. I have observed the news with regards to airliner accidents though. The articles that I have read talk about the possibility of poor or shoddy maintenance, mediocre at best. I believe that the majority of Aviation Maintenance Facilities are reputable and that they employ skilled Mechanics. Having said this, some of you out there may think that I am naïve and not in touch with reality. That’s fine. I look forward to any comments, insights, or criticisms. Airlines have outsourced there maintenance operations to cut costs.

To be in the airline business today is financially a very risky proposition. Some people believe that when airlines outsource the maintenance to cut costs that they also cut corners. But think for a moment about all of the millions of people that fly on airlines each year, and think of the millions of air miles that are flown each year, without incident. But the media will put an airline crash on the front page because if it bleeds it leads. I am not faulting the media, they are just doing there job.

I know that it has been said many, many times that: “Air travel is safer than _____” (fill in the blank). But to the loved ones that have perished in those accidents that is no consolation. Could some of the accidents have been prevented? I am sure of it. Were the accidents due to pilot error? Were the accidents due to a bad design or an engineering flaw? Were the accidents due to bad maintenance? The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigates the crashes to find out. People have asked if the FAA is doing its job. That could be debated on and on. Are all the Aviation Maintenance Facilities around the world at the same level? Do all the Aviation Maintenance Mechanics around the world have the same level of expertise? I am asking a lot of questions here. I look forward to reading the replies that contain possible answers and to the dialogue that hopefully gets sparked.

The airline holds a virtual monopoly for intra-Caribbean flights, and it shows. Once they canceled a flight because of “technical reasons”. Most people realised that the real reason was economy as the flight was poorly booked. No apology, let alone compensation. Another time I almost missed a flight because it left half an hour early. Since I only had hand luggage it was so convenient to kick me out. On numerous occasions my luggage was lost and in most cases I had to go to the airport myself. Another time I was refused boarding although I had a confirmed booking even though I could show the itinerary printed by a travel agent.

Today I was on a flight to St Maarten. While in transit in Antigua I was given a boarding pass for a late afternoon flight, while I remembered having booked a 5 hours earlier morning flight.  Initially the check in agent said the flight was full, but later it appeared there was a free seat. The Antigua supervisor on duty, only wanted to put me on the earlier flight without a penalty if I could provide evidence that I booked the earlier flight. She also acknowledged that it could have happened that the reservation was changed because the earlier flight was full and admitted that it would have been illogical to book a flight with a 6 hour transit time. Only by paying a penalty I was allowed on the earlier flight. However that flight did not depart because of engine problems.

Time after time the flight was delayed with consecutive announcements that the flight would leave in half an hour. When we were called in to go to the gate we were asked to wait in an assembly line. We all had to stand for 20 minutes. Upon arrival in St Maarten after waiting 40 minutes for my bag it was not there. There was no agent to deal with baggage complaints; other agents said there was nobody fromthe airline around and I would best go to the ticket office. They in turn referred me to the (only) check-in agent. After waiting in line for passengers to check in a note was made on a minuscule piece of paper. After arrival of the later flight I called all their numbers in St Maarten; none of the phones were answered. Later, when I took a taxi to the airport, I was told that this happens when they are busy with an incoming or departing flight. After spending some time chatting to passengers who missed their international flights because their Liat flight came in late -they were waiting for hours without any care-, I finally got my luggage at 4:45 pm. My afternoon was ruined.

On the return trip there was only an hour delay but again: no luggage. Two days later I finally got it.

The attitude of their staff is generally friendly, but there are exceptions that I would not call rude, but are clearly not interested in providing  fair service to their customers. Possibly they are instructed by their management to avoid complimentary services at any cost.

After their only major competitor dropped out, they drastically increased their prices. Some time ago, they hired all pilots of a small competing airline -all at the same time-, driving that airline practically out of business.  As sad as it is, there is no alternative for Intra-Caribbean travel, except the boat, which -at times- can be faster and In the Northern Caribbean where several small regional airlines are active.

Tourists arriving in the Caribbean with intercontinental flights usually have 2 free baggages. As this airline does not participate in checking through to final destination anymore (there seem to be no arrangements anymore with other airlines to issue intercontinental tickets including theirs), passengers have to check in again. And get presented with hefty luggage charges which are never waived as far as I have observed.

On the positive side, they provide comprehensive Intra-Caribbean flights throughout the whole region which are a necessity. The moral of this article: Be careful when you fly on routes ruled by one airline only. The lack of competition is not good for their commercial and service attitude.

I’ve been on some pretty wild hiking trips. They’ve included not just the hiking part, over 10 miles of it, add some snow, rain, lightening and even a few rockslides thrown in there for some extra adventure! No doubt about it, trips out in the wilderness can be dangerous, even if you are prepared. But these tips will help you make it home with some great memories.

1. Know what you’re doing. If you just take along your compass but have no idea on how to even use it…what good is it…? Have any idea what to do if you see a bear or mountain lion..? Get some actual experience with your equipment and read a lot about other people’s experiences on the trail so you’re not clueless about what to do when things come up.

2. Compass and map.Yes you need to have both along.

3. A couple of lighters and some matches.Better have a few different ways to get a fire going, and keep them in different places so that if you lose one you’ll still have something to keep you warm and boil water or cook. It’s a lot safer to have more than one way to get a good fire going.

4. A good first aid kit.Make your own as you gain more experience with hiking and camping or buy one but make sure it has good quality products and that your stuff is well made.Make double sure that you have some pain killers, meds for any conditions you or your friends might have like diabetes, some disinfectant, bandages, band aids, notes on how to treat injuries etc.

5. Foot care items.Remember the moleskin, maybe even some duct tape if your shoes rub and a pin to treat those blisters that come up.You have to really take care of your feet when you’re miles away from civilization.

6. Water purification tabs or filter.A water filter works alright, but they can clog and break so often that you really should have a small bottle of iodine tablets or other water purification as a back up. You’ll be glad you did one day.

7. Rain Gear. One of the biggest killers of people in the woods is hypothermia, and it often starts when you get wet and can’t get dry or warm. You need to stay dry.

8. Shelter. This can be a simple or fancy tent or a tarp.Make sure that you know how to use everything and set it up before you get out there.

9. A sleeping bag. Down sleeping bags are the warmest of course, but be sure you know how to keep it dry, or bring a synthetic bag. You’ll be miserable if that gets wet and it weighs a ton to carry around.

10. Specific trip items. Remember Deet- it’ll save your sanity as well as protect you. Maybe sunblock. Maybe white scarf to keep wet and on your head or around your neck or under your hat to protect you from the sun. Portable cook stove..? Think about the specific conditions for the time and place of your trip so that you can tailor your items as much as possible.

Begin to craft your own list as you go on regular trips. And remember to take into consideration anything your friends might need as well. Just a little bit of careful planning will go a very long way to assure that everyone has a safe and happy hiking trip.
