How to travel the world with almost no money | Tomislav Perko | TEDxTUHH

Many people daydream about traveling the world, but all of them have the same excuse – lack of money. Tomislav, after traveling the world for years with almost no money, shows how it is possible for everyone to do the same, if they really want to.

Tomislav Perko, 29, is a travel writer from Croatia. After a career of a stockbroker, broke because of the financial crisis, he hits the road and turns it into his home. He uses alternative ways of traveling – hitchhiking, couchsurfing, working/volunteering, and manages to wander around the world with just a little bit of money in his pocket, meeting the most amazing people on the way.

Five years later, he publishes a book “1000 Days of Spring” and goes around giving lectures about what it means to live on the road. Find out more on his website: https://tomislavperko.com/en/.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://ted.com/tedx

Loved this video and thank you for sharing your experiences! As a female who has been homeless…I do have to argue that your experiences might not have been as benign and "safe" were you a female. In many areas – and perhaps even everywhere – a female traveler is just not viewed the same by some – though certainly not all. Loved the video though and I think you really gave some excellent points to consider for anyone considering traveling in this manor <3

I'm envious. For a woman this would be a bad idea unless she was a butch. Even then, I would not sleep in a tent anywhere. Not even my own country.

This will work for third world countries, but most modern destinations want you to have work visas, even for volunteer work, which means you need at least 3k in your bank.

Indian people are always accepting, many cultures went and settled over there, embracing and becoming one with the surroundings, there is a deep philosophical meaning to it; moreover people are totally contempt with whatever status they have in society giving birth to a serene and peaceful way of living, in simple words, annihilation of jealousy and greed.

Come on, so many comments that it's dangerous to travel if you are a girl.
I'm a girl, 20 years old, so I hitchhike alone, I use couchsurfing alone, I crossed the border by foot alone.
Tomislav said about it, don't be afraid, don't trust media or what people said.
About hitchhiking, it's always YOU take a decision to get in the car or not. And believe me, bad people usually just don't stop.
Our world is an amazing place and good people are everywhere!

Of course its cheaper to travel in LEDC'S!(3rd world countries) than live in say britain or Germany or the US. Thats really obvious…
